New York continues to struggle north of the border.
TORONTO —— The Yankees’ struggles in Toronto, and against the Blue Jays, continue. The Yankees lost 8-5 against the Jays, dropping to 41-27 on the season. The Yankees have now lost 10 of their last 11 games in Toronto dating back to last season and three in a row against the Blue Jays overall.
The game was lost in the first inning. Ryan Weathers continues to be plagued by the long ball. He surrendered two home runs in the game, one to Kazuma Okamoto and one to George Springer, giving up five earned runs overall. Weathers has struggled with the long ball over his last four starts, and that trend continued tonight. Of the 15 home runs he’s surrendered, 12 of them have come off the fastball.
The Yankees offense made this a game, but when you go two for ten with runners in scoring position, leaving nine runners on base, that’s typically not a great recipe for success.
Turning Point
How about the first inning? Ernie Clement hits a ground ball to third base for an infield single, and it opened the floodgates. A wild pitch led to an Alejandro Kirk RBI double, fresh off the IL, and later a two-run home run by Okamoto. It put the Yankees in an immediate 3-0 hole that they could never recover from.
Star Performances
Cody Bellinger continues to be productive. The Yankees attempted to make this a game in the fifth inning, scoring three runs against Yesavage, with the big blow a three-run home run off the bat of Bellinger. Bellinger has looked like his 2019 MVP form in the early goings of the 2026 season, which is welcomed for the Yankees.
Defense/Little Things
Jake Bird has good metrics according to Statcast, though it seems every time he’s come into a game, a run somehow scores. He has inherited 19 runners, and he’s allowed eight of them to score.
Trent Grisham left the game with a right hamstring strain, according to the Yankees. We will receive an update postgame on the severity of the strain, but the injury is costly given the Yankees’ outfield situation.
