Caballero will go for testing on middle finger in New York
BALTIMORE, MD — For a Yankees team that started the season with virtually no injuries, the Yankees are accumulating their far share of injuries now. Upon the team’s arrival in Baltimore, Yankees shortstop Jose Caballero was not in the lineup in the series opener against the Orioles.
It was reveled that Caballero is dealing with right middle finger soreness, as he jammed it after sliding back into first base on a pickoff attempt. After the first game against the Orioles, Caballero went back to New York for further testing. The tests revealed a fractured middle finger that lands him on the IL.
Prior to Last night’s game, Caballero was not concerned about being injured, but Aaron Boone wasn’t sure.
“There’s definitely some concern because Cabby is as tough as they come.” Boone said. “He had a little hard time when he went to throw today. The good thing is the hitting was good.”
Caballero was used in last night’s game to pinch run, and ended the game getting caught stealing. Today, he lands on the IL.
The Yankees recalled Anthony Volpe from AAA Scranton to replace Caballero on the active roster. Since being optioned to AAA, Volpe is hitting under .200 and his defense has been sub-par. The Yankees are really going to have to hope that Caballero is on more of a day-to-day track and does not need to be placed on the IL because Volpe is the opposite of what Caballero has brought to the table in a short sample this season.
Volpe is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Orioles because he is not in Baltimore as of yet. Max Schuemann will get the start at shortstop tonight. It will be a chance for Volpe to showcase exactly what he can do and his worth on this Yankees roster in the time Caballero is on the IL.
